Is this a modern New York-style restaurant or Korean woodfire barbecue place? Perhaps a blend of both.

NY Chargrill newly opened at Jewel Changi Airport, presents quite a unique dining concept which incorporates Korean and Japanese techniques.

Design wise, it is said to be a “barn house-inspired enclave”.

The first thing you may notice is that the restaurant is designed with a contemporary look, with a view of the iconic Rain Vortex.

The menu is pretty extensive. To break it down for you, there are two main sections – the Char Grill sets and ala carte selection.

You can actually have a set meal starting at $10.90, which makes it a great option for those looking for an affordable, hassle-free dining experience at Jewel.

As a bonus, NY Chargrill offers complimentary unlimited appetisers (like the Korean banchan) with any order, adding value to your meal.

If you do not know what to order, start with one of the Char Grill sets. Each set meal includes a choice of meat (in 100g, 200g, or 300g portions), and choice of two items from a selection of soup, rice, or sides.

Sides include Kimchi Mac & Cheese, Mushroom Tempura, Garden Salad, Coleslaw, Soybean Paste Soup. They otherwise cost $5 each.

Customers can even select their preferred wood type (additional $5) – applewood, cherry, pecan, hickory, and mesquite.

The subtle sweetness of applewood is great for seafood and white meats, while the earthy tones of pecan wood enhance the flavours of both white and red meats.

The restaurant offers a range of cuts available from brisket, tongue, prime rib to skirt steak.

There are also premium options like Wagyu beef and Iberico pork which are particularly noteworthy for their marbling and rich flavours.

With a menu spanning grilled items, meats, sides and handmade fresh pasta, here are some of the recommendations from NY Char Grill:

Beef Short Plate Set ($10.90 for 100g, includes soup and side)
The Beef Short Plate Set priced at $10.90 for 100g, stands out as a popular choice due to its affordability.

This set includes a portion of beef short plate, a soup, and a side dish, making it a well-rounded meal.

In terms of texture, the beef short plate was tender with a bit of chewiness.

Depending on how you grill it, the outside often gets a nice char, adding a pleasant crispness to the edges while the inside remains succulent.

Trio Set Premium ($16.90 for 150g, $32.80 for 300g)
I also ordered the Trio Set Premium which includes three types of meat: skirt, prime ribs, and beef brisket.

Each type of meat brings its own texture and flavour to the table.

My favourite was the skirt steak which was notably tender; while the prime ribs offered a more robust and meaty bite.

The beef brisket known for its marbling, was sliced till thin with a more melt-in-your-mouth texture.

Grilled Pork Skewers ($5 per stick)
If you prefer the restaurant to do the grilling, available options include Grilled Tiger Prawns ($19), Grilled Squid ($18), Grilled Iberico Pork Jowl ($25), and Grilled Red Snapper ($24).

I was recommended the Grilled Pork Skewers, which featured relatively succulent meat with char.

Other stick options include Grilled Chicken ($5), Beef Skewers ($6.50), as well as vegetable offerings like Corn Elote ($6) and Grilled Padron Pepper ($4.50), providing a well-rounded selection.

Tempura Young Corn ($12)
One of my favourites here, NY Chargrill serves up golden strips of baby corn encased in a light tempura batter.

You get a bit of that addictive sweet-salty flavour, plus the corn was really crunchy.

Crab Tagliolini ($19)
For pasta lovers, the Crab Tagliolini is a luxurious choice featuring tagliolini pasta bathed in a rich crab sauce.

Ikura is laden on top for added briny flavours.

Beef Bolognese Rigatoni ($15)
The rigatoni, known for its thick tubes, was an ideal carrier for the rich beef and tomato sauce.

A comforting plate of pasta, with sauce hearty and robust.
