[Bangkok] Without a doubt, Bangkok has plenty of great seafood. All around the city, you can find street stalls selling raw crabs or restaurants serving prawns, fish, and much more.

One of the more famous joints has to be Here Hai เฮียให้, a seafood restaurant rather well-known to locals and foodie travellers alike.

First awarded the Bib Gourmand in Michelin Guide 2020, they have retained the title consecutively.

Around the time Here Hai was first recognised, they moved into their current space which is air-conditioned and comfortable. It was also to accommodate the long queues at peak hours, which is still a common sight today.

Located between Ekkamai 10-12, note that the eatery is actually 1.3km away from Ekkamai BTS station (an estimated 20 minutes’ walk).

When you reach there, don’t be surprised to find a very long lines, or a couple of queues (those who reserved, takeaways + delivery).

Plus, sometimes there is nobody at the door to guide customers, so clueless tourists who do not have a reservation end up joining the line, but wait…

So, if you have a reservation (limited spaces available made via phonecall or DMs to their social media channels), you still have to wait in another queue.

If you do not have, go write your name in the exercise book marked “Walk in queue, here” FIRST (there are not who didn’t realise they needed to write their names and found out they lined up for nothing…. Oh no, oh no no no)

Everything at Here Hai is exactly what a seafood addict can hope for: seafood going from fishing boats straight to the kitchen. The fresh catch used in the restaurant is sourced from Surat Thani, a regional seaport in the South.

Having fresh ingredients means that each dish is cooked up in a way to highlights their characteristics.

On the menu are Insane Crab Fried Rice (from 340 THB, SGD13), Insane Lump Crab Meat Fried Rice (from 380 THB, SGD14.50), Signature Omelette Crab with Rice (from 380 THB), Stir-fried Mantis Shrimp with Garlic and Pepper (from 380 THB), and Giant River Prawn (690 THB per piece).

There are also side dishes of Fried Shrimp Roll (320 THB) and Crab Shrimp Roll (160 THB).

Ask anyone that is a frequent diner, and they will tell you that the crab is the signature.

The Insane Crab Fried Rice (THB 340/440/750/990) includes chunks of flower crab meat are like a blanket, covering the bed of fried rice.

For a little more, I decided to go for the Insane Lump Crab Meat Fried Rice (THB 380/480/950/1200) uses bigger chunks of crab for better enjoyment. Note that the dishes generally took about 20 minutes or so to arrive.

Flower crabs are known for their subtle sweetness, although they are less meaty and a chore to peel. With it all done for you like this, however, all that is left for you to do is enjoy the meal.

All in all, I enjoyed the sweet chunks of crab meat of their own, and still considered worth it for the price.

I was pre-warned by a friend who arrived a week earlier that there was not much wok-hei in his Fried Rice, so I ate a mouthful before the photos.

True enough, there was not much of that desired wok-heat which is what would elevate the Fried Rice. Slightly disappointing in that aspect.

There is also the Signature Omelette Crab with Rice (380 THB onwards).

Or explore another seafood with the Scallop or Prawn with Creamy Omelette (320 THB) with came with a river prawn sauce, made from the umami roe of the river prawn.

This was surprisingly my preferred dish, with the hot (yes, this was hot) fluffy egg enveloping the rice, along with chunks of sweet crab meat.

This came with a small dish of Thai seafood sauce, mainly made with green chilis.

The spicy, tangy and very tasty sauce added a kick to the seriously rich omelette. To me, this sauce was quite a star in its own right.

Here Hai

Other popular choices include the Stir-fried Mantis Shrimp with Garlic and Pepper (from 380 THB) or Stir-fried Mantis Shrimp with Salt and Chilli (THB 380) which comes with rice.

At Here Hai, although the price may be a little higher than regular seafood places in Bangkok, you do trade some of that value for seafood that has a much better quality.
