[Bangkok] Toby’s on Sukhumvit 38 is one of those cafes that I bookmarked a number of years, but delayed visiting due to the pandemic.

Known for its Australian-style brunch items, good coffee and setting in a gorgeous and rustic brick building, it was a to-go spot for Bangkok café hoppers for their #OOTD. (A look through Instagram and you would realise the instagrammers were all dressed for this.)

It is where you can take a seat on one of their rattan chairs and dig in happily.

During a recent visit, I found a new Toby’s at Noble Play outlet, good for those who are planning to put Central Embassy (or anywhere near Ploenchit) in the itinerary.

In the chic district of Ploenchit, Toby’s finds its home at Noble PLAY, serving delicious breakfast menus inspired by Australian breakfast culture.

This is Toby’s third branch in Bangkok – its other at Sala Daeng, opened to accommodate the evermoving lifestyle of the urbanites.

The vibes are completely different – this is more modern contemporary, though the menu is similar.

Committed to using fresh ingredients, the quality and freshness is immediately apparent in every item that comes out of the kitchen.

Have your choice of breakfast or brunch from the egg-centric menu. You get a wide range of “Egg & Bread” offerings from Prawn Toast (320 THB), Fresh Corner Fritter (300 THB), Baked Eggs (295 THB), Soft Scrambled Eggs (290 THB), Breakfast Board (350 THB) and of course Smashed Avocado (295 THB).

You should love their Egg Mikado (320 THB), which is almost like an Asian Eggs Benedict.

There is the house-cured salmon and hollandaise sauce on a sourdough, with not one, but two whole poached eggs. Finally, it is finished with a sprinkle of furikake for good measure.

The runny egg yolks, cut open, brought all the ingredients together with a certain smoothness.

Bacon addicts must try the Bacon Rules (350 THB), which has two eggs done any style and bacon done a whopping five ways.

I had the Roasted Pumpkin Scrambled Egg (320 THB) which sounded good on paper, though I didn’t quite fancy the ‘heaviness’ of the pumpkin puree within the scrambled eggs. The sweetness within the eggs also needed getting used to, and I would prefer a cleaner taste.

Cleaner tastebuds might like a simple but nutritious Granola (220 THB) or Sweet Fig & Cottage Cheese Multi-Grain Toast (250 THB).

There is a formidable selection of premium coffee at the café.

The Toby’s house blend is created with beans sourced from Ethiopia, Colombia and Laos. The other blend, aptly named Bryce’s, uses beans from Thailand, Indonesia, India and Ethiopia.

For the milk coffee, the Toby’s is sweet, smooth, caramel like; while the Bruce’s has chocolate notes, nutty, with rich body.

The Iced Long Black (100 THB) with the Toby’s blend is highly acidic. Not my thing, but it does have a fruity and floral note hidden within.

A Flat White (100 THB) from Bryce’s blend is fantastic, being rich and full-bodied. The milk did even out the sharper tastes of the coffee and accentuate the nutty notes.

Overall, if you like your coffee more balanced, something with milk is the way to go, such as the Macchiato (100 THB) or even Mocha (140 THB).

Whatever you like your breakfast to be, it is almost a given that Toby’s should have what you want.
