East side, best side.

The East Coast Plan gets more exciting with the introduction of Joo Chiat Oyster House – the ultimate destination on the East Side for oyster lovers, cocktail enthusiasts, and tapas aficionados.

In case you find the venue of 328 Joo Chiat Road familiar, yes, this is actually by the team behind Kings Cart Coffee.

This space transforms from a brunch and coffee spot in the day, to oyster haven and more in the evening.

Not just Oysters.

This is where you can savour Asian-fusion small plates and tapas, Singapore-inspired cocktails, and coffee-infused concoctions all in one place.

As the clock strikes 5pm each day, the dimmed lighting takes you back in time, evoking the spirit of the historic “red-light district of East Singapore”.

This retro-vintage aesthetic and vibes do set the mood for an evening of indulgence.

Joo Chiat Oyster House takes immense pride in sourcing the finest catch directly from Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.

Hyogo Prefecture offers an ideal environment for oyster cultivation, characterized by nutrient-rich waters and optimal temperature conditions.

With weekly imports and shucking upon order, the oysters guarantee freshness.

The menu offers a range of options to satisfy every palate. Starting at an affordable $3.10 per piece (with a minimum order of 2 pieces per flavour), guests can choose between Naked, Flavoured, or Baked Oysters.

Flavoured Oysters (min order 2 pcs)
For those seeking an explosion of flavours, the Flavoured Oysters are a must-try.

Topped with enticing options such as Chimichurri, Red Wine Mignonette, Salsa, or Yuzu Foam, they are priced starting at $3.90 per piece.

For larger groups or those with bigger appetites, the half dozen and dozen options offer better value.

I liked the Chimichurri most with a touch of zest and liveliness that tantalised the taste buds, well-paired with plump and succulent texture of Hyogo oysters.

For a truly luxurious seafood experience, indulge in the Ikura Oysters which are priced at $8.90 per piece.

Baked Oysters
If you prefer your oysters baked, the Baked Oysters topped with Mentaiko, Miso Butter, Garlic Chili, or Cheese Baked are a tantalising choice.

With prices starting at $4.90 per piece, they provide a warmer and flavourful alternative.

I enjoyed the combination of briny, oceanic flavours of the Oysters with velvety and savoury Miso Butter; as well as the delightful kick of spiciness of the Mentaiko.

Blur Like Sotong Fritters ($14)
This makes for addictive starter, which features crispy fried calamari served with a house-made lemon mayo sauce.

I found the squid both chewy and crunchy at the same time, that you would want to reach for more.

Har Cheong Gai Chicken Loli ($14)
For a twist on a classic zi char dish, you get juicy and well-marinated prawn paste chicken conveniently served on a stick.

There was a lovely lemongrass fragrance, with playful presentation that added a fun element to the dining experience.

Katong Laksa Fish & Chips ($21)
Moving on to the mains, there are offerings of fusion of local and Western flavours such as 8 Hour Braised Beef ($26), Smoked Salmon Caesar Salad ($19) and Napoletana ($20) with home-made tomato coulis.

I was more intrigued by the Katong Laksa Fish & Chips which features the beloved fish fritter and fries dish, but with a twist—a generous dousing of curry laksa gravy which you can add to preference.

Would recommend trying out the tender fish on its own first, before drizzling some of the mildly-spicy sauce over for a different experience. I did think the sauce could be more robust and aromatic though.

Chicken Roulade ($24)
Indulge in juicy chicken thigh roulade stuffed with chicken mousseline, sun-dried tomatoes, and sautéed mushrooms.

This dish is accompanied by luscious potato puree, romesco sauce, and fried kale for a delightful crunch.

Portobello Aglio Olio ($21)
For pasta lovers, you get a choice from Mentaiko Carbonara ($24), Vongole Aglio Oglio ($22) and Portobello Aglio Oglio ($21).

If you are craving something rich and satisfying, try the Portobello Aglio Olio ($21) which presents a plateful of earthy flavours, combining the muskiness of Portobello mushrooms with al dente pasta.

The aglio olio-style preparation ensures a harmonious blend of garlic-infused olive oil as well.

Joo Chiat Oyster Bar not only tantalises your taste buds with their delectable food but also offers an impressive array of locally-inspired cocktails that pay homage to the vibrant and quirky spirit of the Katong neighbourhood.

Embark on a nostalgic journey with the delightful Solero ($20). Crafted as a rum-based libation, it pays homage to the beloved Solero lime-flavored vanilla ice cream that has captured the hearts of many.

East Coast Plan ($22)
One of the standout cocktails takes its inspiration from the infamous “East Coast Plan” fumble.

This cocktail captures the essence of the incident with a refreshing blend of Hendrick’s gin, mint, lime, and prosecco.

The addition of mint adds a refreshing twist, while the prosecco lends a touch of effervescence, resulting in a cocktail that is as enjoyable as it is nostalgic.

Aunty Rosalyn ($22)
A tribute to the real-life matriarch of the same name and the vibrant Peranakan culture of Singapore.

This cocktail encapsulates the feisty nature of an elder with a combination of lemongrass, galangal, and gin.

The aromatic lemongrass and galangal infuse the cocktail with a delightful complexity, while the gin adds a smooth and crisp base.

With each sip, you could be savouring the layers of that pay homage to the Peranakan community.

Whether you are an Oyster enthusiast or simply looking to complement your meal with well-crafted drinks, Joo Chiat Oyster Bar food and locally-inspired cocktails are not to be missed.

They provide a refreshing twist on classic flavours, embodying the spirit of Joo Chiat.
