“Western food” is sort of a catch-all for any stall that sells chicken chop, spaghetti and the likes, right?

Yet we cannot seem to get enough of it.

Located at 416 Pandan Gardens, Bowen’s Western is one of the independent cafes around that does that concept.

There is now a Bowen’s Cafe concept found at Margaret Drive, a neighbourhood around Queenstown. They took the opportunity to set up shop in the newly renovated Margaret Market, which is converted from a defunct wet market.

The indoor food hub is home to other establishments like The Homme Baker, emart24, WaWa Lala Beehoon, and Urban Folks.

Seating is either in the common area or in the square that belongs to Bowen’s Café.

The menu is split evenly between Pasta and Main Course. For the Italian side, expect various types of spaghetti dishes and risotto dishes. On the main course side, grilled meat and fish round up what they have to offer.

With quite a few choices to make, I went for the signature stuff first.

Bowen’s Classic Signature Tagliatelle Bolognese ($14.80) was actually not too bad.

Although the minced beef, red wine tomato sauce combination is homely and may invoke not-so-great experiences with pasta, the rendition here used tagliatelle which held the sauce really well.

Bowen’s Signature Spaghetti Prawns ($14.80) is a similar dish.

One of the more premium plates on the menu is the Bowen’s Signature Tagliatelle Crab Ragu ($24). Every element in this one is better than proper: egg yolk pasta, fresh prawns, blue swimmer crab mat, all in a tomato and butter cheese sauce.

For the main courses, Pork Chop ($11.90) and Chicken Chop ($11.90) are basic but obvious.

They are served with mesclun salad and straight cut fries. Pork is served with mushroom sauce while chicken is served with rosemary red wine sauce.

Breaded Fish & Chips ($12.90) are for seafood lovers.

If you have come this far, may as well get the Mixed Grill Selection, in either Pork Chop and Chicken Chop ($14.90), Chicken Chop and Pork Bratwurst ($14.90), or Chicken Chop & Fish and Chip (14.90). This is insane value for what you are paying for.

Good to have places like Bowen’s Café around, and they certainly bring more choices to the Queenstown neighbourhood.
