The more neighbourhood Thai eateries there are, the easier it is to get in a quick fix for Thai food – without having to fly to Bangkok.

For those living near Queenstown, Bangkok Bites is found at in Strathmore Avenue, right in the core of the neighbourhood.

While it has been around, the Thai eatery is quite relatively under-the-radar, and I don’t recall seeing any food blogs writing about it.

Its theme is all about casual, fuss-free dining.

It means there is nothing to shout about in terms of decoration: plain walls, popular faux-wood tables, although they do have a nice bar counter.

The eatery takes up three units worth of space and has relatively okay capacity. However, during peak dinner times, the space can get quite packed due to word-of-mouth.

Like a typical Thai eatery, the menu is geared towards family-style dishes for sharing. Find all your usual preferences, such as soups, curries, vegetables, meat and seafood stir-fries.

For appetisers, the likes of Thai Style Fried Chicken Mid Wing ($7.80), Handmade Thai Fish Cake ($7.80), and Handmade Thai Prawn Cake ($10.80) should be a hit for everyone. Who can say no to some simple deep-fried goodness?

When it comes to a sharing soup, the Tom Yum Soup ($7) is insanely affordable. Both the clear and red version are priced the same, and the choices of seafood, chicken, or pork are also equivalent in price.

My favourite type of tom yum would pack a sharp punch but has its sour element turned up too. Here, the seafood tom yum is decent, and comes generously with squid, clam, and prawn.

The Thai Green Curry ($9) and Thai Red Curry ($9), on the other hand, comes only in chicken or pork.

You must pick up some meat to share. Some good ones include Cashew Nut Chicken ($9.50), Hot Basil with Minced Meat ($9.50), and Salted Egg Chicken ($9.50).

On the seafood side, splurge a little for Sambal Chilli with Squid ($13.80), Sambal Petai with Prawn ($13.80), Steam Prawn with Thai Chilli & Lime Sauce ($16.80), or Deep Fried Fish with Sweet & Sour Sauce ($21.80).

I thought that the Steamed Squid with Thai Chilli and Lime Sauce ($16.80) was not bad, in which the tender and succulent texture of the squid was complemented by the zesty and tangy lime sauce.

The Thai chilli introduced a fiery kick, adding a layer of heat that tantalisingly tingles the palate.

Even with all the sharing options, individual portions of rice and noodles come in at a relatively inexpensive price for an eatery.

For $6, what you can take home include Pineapple Fried Rice, Seafood Fried Rice, Tom Yum Fried Rice, Sweet & Sour Chicken with Rice, Hot Basil Minced Pork with Rice and more.

Not only does Bangkok Bites bring Thai staples to a convenient location, it also does it at a very accessible price – I cannot say no to that.
