[Madrid, Spain] Our tour guide Javier said “Never leave Madrid without eating the Calamari Sandwich.”
He then dropped us at Plaza Mayor, a central square built during the Habsburg period which became one of the must-visits in Madrid. Plaza Mayor has been through public executions, bullfights, soccer games, markets and is now a space surrounded by traditional shops and cafes.
Amongst which is Sobrino de Botín, the world’s oldest restaurant according to the Guinness Book of World records.
The Calamari Sandwich is simple fried calamari fritters wrapped in baguette, some with mayonnaise, lemon juice or lemon marmalade added. There could be close to 10 shops around Madrid specialising in selling crunchy calamari sandwich.
Javier convinced us that it is his boy’s favourite indulgence. They would always get a set at Casa Rua
with at 5€, while daddy would take the cidar. A bocadillo de calamares without the drink is at a wallet-friendly price of 2.85€.
There was a short line of about 5 people waiting at Casa Rua, and I got mine within a 10 minutes wait.
The fried battered calamari, all coated fried in front of your very eyes, were a winner with its light fluffy batter and chewy fresh rings. The bread though was cold, and could do with some mayonnaise spread to moisten it up.
No frills, cheap and good.
