Tuck Kee Son 德记仔 has recently opened a brand new stall at Jalan Bukit Merah, found at Get Together Coffeeshop 欢聚一堂 opposite ABC Brickworks Food Centre.

The same kopitiam also houses famous stalls such as Pang’s Hakka Noodles and Tai Wah Pork Noodle.

Note that this stall has other outlets at Katong Shopping Centre and Toa Payoh Lor 6.

Featured main items at Tuck Kee Son include the Moonlight Hor Fun aka Yu Kong Hor ($6.30, $9.30), Hokkien Fried Dai Loke Mee ($5.80, $8.80), Wat Tan Hor ($6.50, $9.50), Big Prawn Hor Fun ($9.80, $13.80), Black Pepper Udon ($6.80, $9.80), and Crispy Rice Mui Fan ($6.50).

This can be paired with dishes such as Baby Octopus in Soy Sauce ($11.80), Traditional Chicken Feet ($6), Lime Lala ($10.80), Ipoh Spicy Fried Meat ($7), and Homemade Fried Chicken Wings ($5 for 4 pcs).

The Baby Octopus ($11.80) which is first steamed before drizzled with shallot oil, fried garlic and spring onion, is quite the signature item here.

As for the Yu Kong Hor, the zi char dish is called “Moonlight Hor Fun” due to the raw egg yolk that resembles a full moon against the night sky.

In this case on top of the dark wok-fried rice noodles. (The other famous zi char place selling this dish is Keng Eng Kee Seafood.)

The Hor Fun is stir-fried in savoury-sweet dark soy sauce to add smokiness and distinctive wok-hei to the otherwise bland rice noodles, before adding in lard, pork slices and vegetables.

While I really liked the Moonlight Hor Fun the first time I tried it, perhaps they are having challenges keeping the quality consistent in all outlets.

The rice noodles I had was surprisingly bland, and tasted in need of some salt or something; and I don’t normally use “bland” to describe zi char dishes (usually it is the other way round).

The crunchy pork lard found throughout the dish and sambal belacan were there to save the day.

Even the Big Prawn Hor Fun ($9.80) tasted it needed some sort of seasoning – which was strange.

But to its consolation, portion was substantial, and there was strong wok-hei and prawns were nicely crispy.
