Dreaming of the islands of Greece?

What you can do is take a culinary trip to the Mediterranean from our doorsteps. Around the island, there are many restaurants serving authentic and delectable Greek & Mediterranean food, from the famous tzatziki dips to the tantalising seafood.

Here are 10 Greek & Mediterranean restaurants in Singapore for you to visit:

BAKALAKI Greek Taverna
38A Martin Road, Singapore 239072
Tel: +65 6836 3688
Opening Hours: 5:30pm – 12am (Mon – Thurs), 11:30am – 2:30pm, 5:30pm – 12am (Fri – Sun)

BAKALAKI Greek Taverna has found a new home at Martin Road (so don’t head over to Tiong Bahru to the old space).

The word “Bakaliko” (μπακάλικο) represents a traditional neighbourhood store, while “Meraki”(μεράκι) represents the love, spirit and soul in everything that Balakaki creates.

The interior is warm and welcoming, reminiscent of a traditional Greek home designed by award-winning Greek designer Dimitris Economou.

I was recommended the Horiatiki ($20.90), in which this traditional-style Greek Salad made a great start to the meal with its Kalamata olives, Feta cheese and Bakalaki Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The Moussaka ($26.90), a baked casserole of beef minced meat, eggplant, potato and béchamel sauce is also worth a try. The restaurant still does it the traditional way from scratch, instead of say just putting everything into the oven.

The Kalamaki Merida ($25.90 – $27.90) which are grilled skewers are good for sharing, coming in Beef, Chicken, Chicken Yiro and Minced Meat with Beef & Lamb options. They come served with tomato, onion, tzatziki and pita bread.

This new space is huge, suitable for families and groups for a good time.

Blu Kouzina
10 Dempsey Road, #01-20, Singapore 247700
Tel: +65 6875 0872
Opening Hours: 8:30am – 10:30pm (Sat – Sun), 11:30am – 3:30pm (Mon – Sun), 5:30pm – 10:30pm (Mon – Sun)

Blu Kouzina is one of the favourites amongst foodies for authentic Greek cuisine in Singapore, located on Dempsey Hill. There is another outlet at Siglap.

Such a wonderful space, I almost felt like I wasn’t in Singapore anymore. The inteiors was like a huge living room, filled with groups of families and friends sharing plates of Tzatziki, Bifteki Stin Sxara, Baklava, dipping breads into the signature olive oil.

Best to come with family or a couple of friends, to share plates of Kalamaki Souvlaki ($27.50) – Beef Kalamaki served with fresh onion, sliced tomatoes and inhouse bread; Greek Grilled Fish ($50.50 for 400g sea bream) and Jumbo Prawns ($50.50).

If you come during lunch, there are pasta dishes including Kapama Pasta ($16.50) with homemade tomato base, Santorini Pasta ($16.50), Pomegranate Pasta ($16.50) and Eggplant Pasta ($16.50).

The show-stopper was the Xtapodi Shara ($41.50) which was grilled octopus. The grilled tentacle had a differentiating texture that had a light crust outside the tender meat with a chewy bite, yet not rough or rubbery.

Not much additional seasoning needed, to savour taste of the Mediterranean.

Opening Hours: 12pm – 3pm, 6pm – 10:30pm (Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri), 6pm – 10:30pm (Wed), 12pm – 10:30pm (Sat – Sun)

Mykonos is one of the few Greek Taverna-style restaurants in Singapore serving known Mediterranean cuisine.

This is located at Quayside Isle Sentosa Cove, so you can get some of the by-the-waters vibes.

The open-kitchen restaurant with bar counter is immediately charming, decorated in the classic Greek colours of white and navy blue, with wait staff dressed in simple white tees.

The dishes served are said to be what “a Greek granny would serve you at home”.

These include wholesome and hearty, including Mousaka ($27) – eggplant casserole with braised beef sauce and béchamel topping; Gemista ($27) – oven-baked Baldo rice and Greek herbs stuffed with Roma tomatoes with yogurt mint sauce; and Melitzanes Imam ($24.50) – whole baby eggplants with caramelized onions stuffing, spiced with cinnamon, and soft baked feta.

From the charcoal grill, there are the Pita Gyros ($27.50), Mosharaki ($49), Giaourtlou ($33) and Mixed Grilled Platter ($96 for 2 pax).

Great vibes here, and may provide a substitute for the Greek wanderlust.

Clarke Quay Blk A, #01-02, 3A River Valley Road, Singapore 179024
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Tues – Fri), 9am – 10pm (Sat – Sun), Closed Mon

Santorini-inspired Zorba the Greek Taverna is more than just a place to eat – it is a cure for wanderlust by bringing Greece to you.

Enjoy a healthy Hellenic menu of authentic, timeless Greek cuisine in a genuinely relaxing ambiance. Mediterranean coast colours of blue and white fill the interiors, offering waterfront views for your pleasure.

Some of the highlights on the regular menu include Dips Platter ($28), Beef Souvlaki ($28), Lamb Kebab ($28), Lavraki ($28) which is a Greek-style Mediterranean Sea Bass baked in oven, and Mediterranean Seafood Stew ($48).

They have a Weekend All-Day Breakfast (available 9am to 4pm) includes Shakshuka ($22), Giaourti ($12), Greek pancakes Tiganites ($16), Tsoureki ($16), Avokanto ($18), Avga ($20), and Zorba Breakfast Platter ($26).

The all-in-one dish Zorba Breakfast Platter ($26) has everything you need for a hearty balanced meal.

You get either scrambled or poached eggs, served with meats (Greek sausage and bacon), mushrooms (feta-stuffed grilled Portobello), veggies (roasted Roma tomatoes and caramelised onion), fruit (avocado), and a slice of toast.

Pano Kato
Tanglin Mall #02-23, 163, Tanglin Road Singapore 247933
Tel: +65 6235 5056
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

As I was a fan of House Of AnLi at Tanglin Mall, it didn’t take me too long to head over to Pano Kato which is a grill house, pizza eatery and deli all-in-one located just a level below.

“Pano Kato” refers to “upstairs downstairs” in Greek.

Owners Anne-Jean and Panagiotis aim to serve up delicious home-style food using the best ingredients from the Mediterranean Sea and region.

Grilled Halloumi ($18), Hariatiki Classic Greek Salad ($24), Papou’s Imam Bayildi Greek Stuffed Eggplant ($22) and Fried Calamari ($28).

The Grilled Souvlaki ($28 – $32) comes with two skewers of pork, chicken, beef, lamb or salmon served with roma tomatoes, onions, tzatziki and pita bread.

I loved the Grilled Octopus which though looked small for its price, had an incredibly chewy texture, flavourful and well-grilled.

Alati Divine Greek Cuisine
73 Amoy St, Singapore 069892
Opening Hours: 12pm – 2:30pm, 5:30pm – 11pm (Mon – Fri), 5:30pm – 11pm (Sat), Closed Sun

Alati – ancient Greek for Salt – flies in fresh produce from the Aegean Sea weekly.

Alati flies in Lavraki (Greek seabass), Tsipoura (Greek seabream), Fagri (Greek red porgy) and Milokopi (Greek shi drum). To really taste the freshness and sweetness of the fish, have it grilled or salt baked.

For the salt baked version, the fish is covered in a thick layer of salt crust. The salt crust seasons the fish and locks in its juices, keeping the flesh moist.

Since this is a Greek restaurant, having the Tzatziki ($18) is a must. Tzatziki is a dip made from Greek yogurt, and Alati does it with grated cucumber, chopped garlic and fresh dill.

Other choices include Fava ($18), a Santorini split bean puree with onions and capers. Tyrokafteri ($18) is a spicy Greek feta cheese dip with Greek yoghurt, red peppers and chili.

The Pita ($5), a grilled fresh Greek flatbread, is designed to go with any of the dips.

(Note: the restaurant is temporarily closed for a minor renovation.)

Fotia
28 Duxton Hill, Singapore 089610
Opening Hours: 5pm – 11pm (Tues), 12pm – 11pm (Wed – Sat), 12pm – 9pm (Sun), Closed Mon

Fotia serves Greek food in a homely setting, out of a corner spot on Duxton Hill. The furniture and patterned cushions remind me of a cottage on the coasts of Greece.

As a Mezze (appetiser), you can share a Bougiourdi Eggplant ($19.8), baked in light tomato sauce and covered with chili paste and crumbled feta.

Continue with an Artichoke Salad ($24.80) or half Artichoke Salad ($15.80), both with arugula, crispy artichoke hearts, dried figs and pomegranate. The combination of bitterness, sweetness and sourness is refreshing before you get your meat dishes in.

The star of Fotia is the choice of sharing platters. To save the trouble of having to choose, the Mix Combo Platter ($74.80) comes with charcoal grilled beef skewer, chicken skewer, lamb kebabs, fried potatoes, pita and dips.

If this is not enough, there is always the Pork Gyros Plate ($30.80) or Wagyu Short Ribs ($28.80) to go with the platter.

Original Sin Restaurant
Jln Merah Saga 01-62, Chip Bee Gardens, Blk 43, Singapore 278115
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 2:30pm, 6pm – 10:30pm (Mon – Sun)

A Mediterranean and Italian restaurant, Original Sin can be found in the heart of Holland Village. Having been around since 1997, there are quite a few Greek dishes that you can enjoy in the alfresco setting.

The Mezze Platter comes in Small ($22), which feeds 2, or Large ($32), for 3 to 4 diners. The dish is made up of dips selected for you, including Hummus, Beetroot and Walnut Dip, Capsicum and Almond Dip and Tzatziki.

Of course, the platter comes with Pita bread. There are also little chunks of fried feta, served with falafel balls. The falafel balls contrast well with the dips, so be generous with the dips.

Share a Mediterranean Pizza ($27), with feta, olives, and semidried tomatoes as the main toppings. The layered flavour of the semidried tomatoes go well with the tangy feta on each slice of pizza and I quite enjoyed it.

There are a few other Greek mains that you can have all to yourself. The Moussaka ($29) here has lentils on top of the usual eggplant and tomato, with a silky bechamel sauce to complete.

Alaturka Mediterranean & Turkish Restaurant
15 Bussorah Street, Singapore 199436
Tel: +65 6294 0304
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 10:30pm (Mon – Sun)

Located right in the heart of historic Kampong Glam, Alaturka Mediterranean & Turkish Restaurant has been serving classic Turkish dishes along with new interpretations for 15 years.

Its quality was also met with approval, when it was once listed in the Michelin Guide Singapore with a “Bib Gourmand”.

Some of the dishes you can look forward to include the Tas Kebab ($27.80) which is an oven-baked beef stew with mashed potatoes; Makarna, a Turkish-style pasta covered with vegetable sauce, mozzarella cheese and topping of your choice.

One of the highlights is the Karisik Kebab, a feast platter of succulent beef, lamb and chicken kebabs ideal for sharing, served with butter rice and a generous portion of vegetable salad.
