Kimchi Jib Express presents itself as an interesting find amidst the more mainstream dining establishments at Holland Village.

Occupying space within a coffee shop at 33 Lor Liput, the locale doesn’t immediately suggest the provision of authentic Korean fare.

Yet a deeper dive into their menu reveals an offering of Korean stews and soups. All of which are priced below the $10 mark.

This competitive pricing makes Kimchi Jib Express an appealing option for those seeking economical dining options without compromising on authenticity.

One other good thing is that there are stews and dishes that traditionally cater to group servings, but are available in individual portions here.

Central to their menu is the Original Kimchi Jjigae, a staple in Korean cuisine.

For those unfamiliar, Kimchi Jjigae is a traditional Korean stew comprising primarily of kimchi, complemented with tofu, assorted vegetables, and occasionally meat or seafood.

The stew is typically known for its hearty and spicy nature, providing warmth and comfort. Here’s what you can find at Kimchi Jib Express:

Original Kimchi Jjigae ($6.50)
One of the standout aspects is the use of house-aged kimchi.

The maturation process of the kimchi introduces a nuanced flavour profile, characterised by a deeper fermentation tang, adding more sourness and layers of depth to the stew’s overall taste.

Paired with the robust broth, it creates a satisfying balance that resonates well with those familiar with the dish, and serves as a fitting introduction for first-timers.

Every order of soup is complemented with a serving of a bowl of rice and banchan.

On the occasion of my visit, the banchan included kimchi, mashed potato, and beancurd skin. Really affordable for $6.50 nett.

Beef, Mackerel, Pork Belly, or Tuna Kimchi Jjigae ($8.50)
For those looking to explore variations, Kimchi Jib does not disappoint. I would recommend adding some meat or seafood for more satisfying bite.

There are options of the tender Beef Kimchi Jjigae, the rich Mackerel Kimchi Jjigae, the hearty Pork Belly Kimchi Jjigae, or the flavourful Tuna Kimchi Jjigae – each priced at a reasonable $8.50.

A recommendation from the owner is the Mackerel Kimchi Jjigae. The mackerel lends a rich taste which contrasts with the spicy and tangy undertones of the kimchi.

Budae Jjigae or Army Stew ($9.50)
Where most establishments offer the Army Stew in communal portions, Kimchi Jib has opted for a one-pot serving suitable for a single diner.

This stew boasts a medley of ingredients, including spam, sausage, rice cakes, ramyeon, beancurd, kimchi, among others.

The taste profile is multi-faceted with more savoury-sweet flavours. I found the base with a sweeter note than the other Kimchi stews.

Original Doenjang Jjigae ($6)
This fermented bean paste soup has an earthy flavour, which is deepened by the fermented essence, creating a unique blend of savouriness with underlying umami notes.

For patrons looking for a richer variant, the soup can be ordered with additional beef or seafood, taking the price to $8.

Seafood Sundubu Jjigae ($8.50)
Another popular choice, what I liked was that Seafood Silky Tofu Soup includes both the soft tofu and beancurd and varying seafood such as lala clams.

You get gentle, soft texture of tofu complemented by the varying textures of the assorted seafood with mild spiciness that tingles the palate just enough to be invigorating.

Kimchi Bacon Fried Rice ($6.50)
It combines the tangy, spicy flavours of kimchi with the smokiness of bacon, resulting in a plate that is both fiery and savoury, with the rice absorbing and melding these flavours.

The dining experience at Kimchi Jib is further enhanced by an array of side dishes.

The Grilled Mentaiko Tofu ($4) and Grilled Mentaiko Ebi ($5) offers a bite enhanced by the rich spiciness of creamy pollock roe.

For something meaty, there is the LA-Galbi ($9) consisting of four pieces of grilled beef ribs – succulent with a slightly sweet exterior.

There is also Stir-Fry Kimchi ($6.50) available with either pork or beef which offers a zesty addition that can be paired with any main dish.

Head to Kimchi Jib if you have yearning for Korean stews and soups that don’t compromise on quality despite their budget-friendly tags.
