Founded way back in 1954, this Halal Indonesian restaurant specialises in reasonably-priced Minangkabau cuisine, namely Nasi Padang and Beef Rendang.

When it comes to Nasi Padang, the price can differ much from store to store, but Rumah Makan Minang enjoys a steady crowd because regulars love its delish food at a pricing considered reasonable for its popularity and quality.

Their flagship outlet is located at Kandahar Street near Sultan Mosque, usually with bustling crowd during the weekends with some of the well-loved items sold out early. (Also read: 10 Must-Try KAMPONG GELAM Halal Restaurants)

Not many may know there is actually another outlet at the basement level of Our Tampines Hub; and the family has opened this outlet as they have many fans staying in the East.

They actually open for breakfast as well, so you know where to go now if you crave for Mee Rebus, Soto Padang, Lontong, Gado-Gado, and Nasi Rawan in the morning.

Come lunch time, and the restaurant will be packed with diners who are there for a hearty plate of Nasi Padang – steamed rice served with various choices of cooked dishes.

Some of the popular dishes include Beef Rendang, Paru Belado (fried marinated cow’s lung served with chilli slices), Ayam Bakar Padang (barbecued marinated chicken), Ayam Goreng Bumbu (fried chicken in spices), Ikan Bakar Berempah (grill mackerel), Sayur Buncis (stir-fried green beans), to Terung Belado (egg plant fried with red chilli marinate).

Most would add a dish of Beef Rendang of succulent beef cooked over slow charcoal fire – I particularly enjoyed this; or Ayam Belado Hijau – tender chicken in signature green chilli marinate.

The Sotong Masak Hitam – fresh marinated squid in a tangy dark soy gravy; Ikan Belado Hijau – fried mackerel in signature green chilli marinate; and Sayur Lodeh of mixed vegetables boiled soft, spiced and flavoured will also add fiery kicks to your meal.

I found myself drenching the fragrant rice with curry sauce from the Ayam Gulai – tender chicken cooked in a rich and tasty curry stew. Generally, I found the dishes not too spicy and very manageable in terms of fiery levels.

My friend found the items tasting more refined, homely and less greasy than the typical Padang store as well.

An interesting aspect of this store is several items are cooked with healthier ingredients – HPB approved.

They include the Ayam Gulai Padang, Rendang, Fishball Soup, Assam Pedas and Sotong Hitam which contain less coconut milk and prepared with healthier vegetable oil. There is also red rice available, a type of whole grain rice.

Talking about HPB, I loved the refreshing, milked Iced Milk Tea ($2.20) offered here. If they could lower the sugar level, I would feel less guilt having this.

If you have space or come in a group, do order the Indonesian Tahu Telur, a dish of large fried tofu mixed with eggs, grated peanuts with addictive dark sweet soy sauce. Sedap lah.
