What can possibly be better than fried chicken? Perhaps Ayam Geprek with rice or Indomie.

Mrs Hen is the place to be for good and homely comfort dish of Ayam Geprek, or smashed battered chicken.

Originating from Indonesia, the dish is best served with rice, or sometimes noodles, usually slathered with a healthy dose of fiery sambal.

They are located in Sunshine Plaza, being put in good company with eateries such as Victor’s Kitchen, Ichi Tei Japanese Dining, Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House, Teng Bespoke, and The Big Cheese.

I have heard of Mrs Hen since it opened its first outlet at a coffeeshop within Telok Ayer (121 Telok Ayer Street #01-01) in 2021.

In just over two years, they have expanded to four outlets, including East Village (430 Upper Changi Road #01-43) and National University of Singapore (The DECK Canteen).

On the menu are offerings of Ayam Geprek with base sauces of sambal, green chilli, Balinese lemongrass chilli, mango chilli, onion chilli, or salted egg sauce.

The first visit should be probably accompanied by the Ayam Geprek Sambal Signature.

Just admire the chicken with crispy batter, smashed thin with a scoop of sambal spread over it. Some pickled vegetables help with the spice, but not much.

The sambal, done Indonesian style, is made with crushed fresh red chillies. The spice level is customisable, from 10, 20, 30, to “DANGER!”.

The owner used to grow chillies in her kampung backyard, so you know that she understands the potency of her sambal.

A bite with the juicy chicken, chilli, and rice is either comforting or deadly. I paired it up with Indomie for a change.

I opted for a “Level 20” which appeared on paper to be fairly manageable, but boy oh boy, the spice seemed tame and doable at the start… but it really hits you down to the belly half way through the meal.

If you would like to try something higher, gear up for the sweat levels or possible hot toilet runs the next day. hee hee

In the alternative, the Ayam Geprek Sambal Hijau is made with green chillies, for a less spicy rendition of sambal.

Similarly, Ayam Geprek Sambal Merah is made with fresh red chillies and lemongrass – inspired by Balinese elements.

If a decision between the three is hard, an Ayam Geprek Sambal Platter is a good choice.

The includes 3 kinds of chilli – the signature red, green and Balinese Lemongrass chilli which helped some citrusy elements.

Also consider the Ayam Geprek Salted Egg: the oozing salted egg sauce covering the chicken is timeless and tasty. I just wish there was more sauce to go around.

Now, for those who really, really like the chillies, Mrs Hen does sell the sambal by the tub. Think about it.

Otherwise, just enjoy the Ayam Geprek in store – no shame in asking for a lower spice level.
