Thanks to “Crazy Rich Asians”, the popularity of Newton Food Centre among tourists seems to have increased, being visibly more crowded when I visited on a weekday night.

Newton Food Centre somehow has the reputation of being a touristy place, and not so much a hot-favourite for the locals.

It has gotten better over the years, hawkers not as pushy, and there are still gems here and there.

Heng 興 which has been around since 1971, was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Coincidentally, it’s neighbour stall Alliance Seafood known for chilli crabs received the same accolade. (Did the inspectors order from both stalls at the same time?)

“Chai Tow Kway it is a dish of stir-fried cubes of radish cake, commonly available in white and black versions – added with dark sweet sauce.)

The owners from Heng still steam their own Carrot Cake, which is getting more unusual in Singapore as many stalls simply get supplies from the factory.

Typically, I find that ‘homemade’ carrot cakes have a more wobbly texture with less generic taste – sometimes you can feel those strips of radish.

Be prepared to wait if you go during peak hours, though they would likely send the plate to your table if you sit nearby. So if you ordered a couple of dishes from various stalls, this may be the last to arrive.

The White Carrot Cake was quite ‘eggy’ with soft and moist cubes, though I could imagine some people finding this on the bland side and would reach out for more chilli.

(Didn’t like the Styrofoam plate by the way, oh well.)

I personally preferred their Black version, with flavourful sweet-savoury taste of the dark soy sauce, but yet you do not get that ‘burnt’ taste you might have experienced elsewhere.

Surprisingly while most customers seem to come for the Carrot Cake, their Fried Oyster Omelette ($5, $8, $10) would actually be what I would head for again.

There was this nice crisp layer of egg without being too starch, accompanied with tasty plump oysters.

While this Carrot Cake stall may not be considered the best of the best in Singapore, and some people may just prefer those from their nearby food centre, this is a good find if you are at Newton Food Centre.
